The concept for Lee-Jackson Memorial Park was announced publicly at the annual Lee-Jackson Day events in Lexington, Virginia in January 2023. The park had only been an idea a few weeks earlier, but by the end of the month we had a contract completed and closed on Phase I of the project in February that same year. By early March we held our first volunteers workday to clear trees and debris for the installation of the flag site which was sponsored by the Virginia Flaggers. Since then the park has grown with additional land purchases and lease agreements as we work towards the ultimate goal of creating a roughly 20 acre outdoor historical park and museum.
Col. Brandon Dorsey, LS serves as the manager and lead developer of Lee-Jackson Memorial Park. As a Professional Land Surveyor and property developer, he brings a wealth of technical understanding to creating a sustainable and functional recreational facility. Brandon was a native to Lexington and Rockbridge County where he is the third generation to run his family's business. He has deep ties to the history of the area with ancestors buried within site of Lee-Jackson Memorial Park that were with Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg. After graduating high school, Brandon received his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from Bridgewater College where he graduated near the top of his class academically. Brandon had the distinction of having been commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 2024 for his community service and historical preservation activities.
Brandon learned his life-long love of history from his maternal grandfather Charles Coffey, Sr., a WWII veteran who loved recounting the stories of not only the Pacific Theater, but of the Confederate Armies. Brandon decided to help form The Stonewall Brigade Camp #1296, Sons of Confederate Veterans of Lexington, VA in the year 2000 as its Adjutant/Treasurer and became an advocate and Chairman for the Lee-Jackson Day Committee. In addition to his local camp, he has served the Virginia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans as an Adjutant/Treasurer, Brigade Commander, and Division Commander. He also served the national Army level of the SCV as A.N.V. Chief-of-Staff in 2008-2009. In 2007 he worked with his local representatives in the General Assembly to create the Lee Memorial Commission to celebrate the 200th birthday of Robert E. Lee which included funding to promote Lee's impact on Virginia and in education. Brandon served as a member of the Rockbridge County Committee for the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the Civil War and was an organizer of Thunder-in-the-Valley, a reenactment of the defense of the region during Hunter's 1864 raid. Brandon took a step-back from his busy promotion of history due to family concerns and the effects the 2008 housing crisis caused for his family business, but he has returned to active service in the arena of promoting and preserving history when he was elected Commander of The Stonewall Brigade SCV Camp in December 2021.
